Montessori Students Honor Cultural Icons with Lunch of Thanks

COLE BAY, Sint Maarten – To celebrate the first Thanksgiving season in new Country Sint Maarten, the Upper Elementary students of Sint Maarten Montessori School honored 10 of the island’s best-known cultural figures with a Lunch of Thanks, catered by Shieka’s.

Small teams of Grade 4 and 5 students prepared speeches of introduction, gifts and certificates of thanks for their guests, who hailed from the fields of art, music and sports.

Served in the school’s seasonally decorated gymnasium, the festive lunch of traditional turkey and “fixin’s” also featured specially prepared vegetarian dishes to tempt the guests. Before the meal, students entertained their guests with individual keyboard selections.

This year’s honorees included dancer Clara Reyes; artists Ruby Bute and Roland Richardson; musicians Urmain “Youmay” Dormoy, Erwin “Shabba” James, Roland “Ras Bushman” Joe and Neville “Mighty Dow” York; and sports leaders Malcolm Maidwell, Les Brown and Robbie Ferron (represented by his wife, Cary Byerley).
